Life
of Pi triggered a question in my mind. Will the last instinct of man ascertain
faith?
A
boy stuck on a boat with a carnivorous tiger which would grab him any minute
and a sea larger than any landmass to sail. Well, yes survival instincts are
something we have all heard but what ANG LEE managed to pull of was to add life
to those instincts. The eyes of the tiger made you believe that it had
emotions, it connected to the young boneless lad Pi. Then, just like Pi, Ang
lee left us in tears when we learnt the truth that all was seen in the Bengal tiger's
eyes were reflection of our own emotions.
There
were several moments that were awe strikingly inspiring; perhaps, it will be
difficult to hold on to a few. Yet, in those moments, all I could say was
OH!
1) The scene were life was so still
that Pi had doubt whether he was day dreaming or night dreaming and that he was left with
no remains of pencil. That moment was captured so beautifully that it will stay
in head as "the last moment of life". It felt like that’s how most of
our dying moments would be - endless and empty.
2) The scene change from the night to day…again in the motionless
space of never ending sea and sky. Its quite easy to show an action/emotion in
a scene that has some thing going on, but to deliver it in a limbo was
something I never thought was possible. But here the cinematographer has
delivered an expression of art so beautiful that before I could finish my first
OHHHHHHHHHH with the night scene, there was the sunrise in the same endless
conjunction of sea and sky, carnivore and Pi.
3)
Perhaps, quite a few would have missed this scene. On the
carnivorous island with millions of meerkats, I know the obvious one was one of
the meerkats hugging Pi, but no I am talking about the scene were Pi was
relaxing in the pool of fresh water and our Richard Parker was busy hogging
over few of meerkats on the other side. In one corner frame one of the mother
meerkat was lifting its tiny baby to show the strange creatures. And yes next
time you do watch the movie please OH! please, don’t miss the adorable pair in
the corner of the frame.
Lastly, the storytelling was just so honest that it takes your
heart and makes you at least for few moments, if not for more, to have faith in
GOD.
